Health Status of Children and Youth Understanding the health status of children and youth involves an examination of multiple aspects of health. This chapter explores the physical, mental, and social emotional well-being of children and youth in Florida. Physical health issues covered include dental health, physical health (e.g. asthma and injury), special health care needs, and body weight, physical activity and nutrition. Health behaviors discussed include such risky behaviors as tobacco use, sexual activity and alcohol and drug use. Mental, behavioral and developmental aspects include the presence of developmental risks and problems as well as socioemotional difficulties and problematic behaviors.
